(Tolkienism 1) In The Beginning/Once Upon A Time

(This is part of a rap album I’m writing to describe a set of Christian ideas I like to refer to as Tolkienism.)

The Purpose of this album,
These Words, This essay
Is not to teach a new doctrine
Or to lead you astray.
The word I coined, Tolkienism
refers to a man
Whom I disagree with on many things.
But this is just a plan
Of mine to show you something
You might never have seen
When reading Scriptures and doctrines.
This is something in between-
The lines about Sovereignty
In the Westminster Confession
That for Me and John Ronald
Is/Was an obsession.

I’m penning these words
Because I feel like
Many cold-hearted Christians
Need to wake up and lay sight
On the Truth of God’s word
And the implications that come
From what the Bible says
About God’s One and Only Son!

I’m talking mainly to Reformed
Christians like me.
The “Frozen Chosen” some call us.
And we are God’s family.
But we’re holed up in our rooms
Typin’ on our computers
Like little hermits hidin’ from the world
It’s rapists and looters.
Hidin’ behind fancy words
And the logical strength
Of presuppositionalism
And let me be frank,
The more puffed up you get
The more you forget,
The first question in the Shorter Chat-
Wait, what was that?

I’m all for theology
And I love thinking deep.
I think these things need to be defined.
So we’re not on that steep-
Slippery slope. We’re on that solid ground.
God’s Word revealed.
But here’s what many cold hearts miss
This is what is concealed.

But before I let this album loose
Let me tell you please,
I’m not a Pastor or Teacher
No not in the least.
I’m a writer, I’m a poet,
At least some people say.
I’m just a Calvinist Christian
Who’s here to convey
These Words, This Truth
And I hope you engage it.
I hope you won’t be cold
Or cage-stage it.
Test my words, by The Word
See if it’s in sync.
Then get your own conclusion.
Let me know what you think.

God Is The Teller. We Are The Story.

Normally a Thesis is something small,
One or two sentences at most.
Since essays aren’t traditionally hip-hop
I’ma let this one coast.
I’m gonna elaborate on a few things I wish
To speak about in this book.
But listen up close the actual Thesis
Is inserted in the hook.

God is The Teller.
We are the story.
He made us for His Glory.

Like a master novelist The Lord conceived us
In His Divine Imagination.
But unlike a novelist his reasons were pure!
Glory was His one motivation.
Inspiration for us came from His own nature.
The Creator’s own mind projected
In the orderly poetic and soil-y genetic
Man, Adam: God’s Image reflected.

God is The Teller.
We are the story.
He made us for His Glory.

And as we move forward into these arguments
Which I have prepared for you
Let me leave with words from The Shorter Catechism
Paraphrased and Rhym-ed too.
The chief end of man is to glorify God
And enjoy Him forever.
Now don’t you think God had that in mind when he created us?
Or do you think that’s too clever?

God is The Teller.
We are the story.
He made us for His Glory.

Types And Shadows

In the book of Hebrews we’re introduced
To a cavalcade list of saints,
And how Christ’s providence can be seen through their lives.
Though in a way that is quaint.
Types and Shadows the Bible calls them,
They’re there for God’s people to see
The miraculous plan of Salvation in this world
That Christ only can bring to be.

We see spectacular failures
Triumphs, betrayers,
Action and so much more
We see Kings and Queens
And some very strange things
Throughout the Bible’s great score.
But if you’re paying attention you’ll be asking yourself,
“God, what does it all mean?”
I’ma quit rappin’ a minute to let God explain it
In Hebrews 11:13.

13 All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. 15 And indeed if they had been [l]thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not [m]ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

And So we see that in this life
Things point to something more clear.
A Saviour and Creator who is a dominator
Of everything around us here.
He uses the failures, triumphs, and betrayers
To remind us of what’s real.
What’s stored up in Heaven is without leaven
And on that He puts His seal.

So while Moses lead Israel,
And David did too
There’s only one King that they all point to.
The Saviour on the throne, The Chief Cornerstone
To which everything points, alone.
